Every person is born with primarily two (of four) temperaments. I love teaching on the topic- in COLORS.
However, there are critical ramifications you may not understand regarding this fascinating topic.
On the surface, one may think temperaments is simply a fun subject to investigate and not important or necessary for your daily life. May I challenge you to take this more seriously?
Mark is a YELLOW/RED child. On the playground, he may get picked on and pushed around at lunch. I can predict the outcome by knowing his temperament reactions to most situations. His YELLOW will either laugh it off and he will go to another area to play, or his RED will kick in and he will stand up for himself. (Hopefully, a fight will not ensue.) REDS are strong kids.
Mark’s brother John is a BLUE. He is sensitive, serious and feels things deeply. In the exact same scenario, John will be hurt. This unfortunate occurrence may ruin his day to the extent that dinner conversation will usually include tears and declarations of never wanting to go back to school the rest of his entire life, for ever and ever amen.
When it comes to children, knowing their primary reactions to different situations could mean the difference between you helping them navigate a good day or sending them off to a disastrous experience.
All of us are wired differently from birth. My sister and I laugh, wondering how we grew up in the same house because we have such different memories of the same events. We have different temperaments!
Learning YOUR temperament – (and those temperaments of family and friends) – can provide amazing insight into your relationships. Do you ever wonder why some people are easier for you to like? Others, not so much?
This information sheds radical light, especially dealing with children. And, may I add, temperaments are predictable even when special needs or other extenuating environmental circumstances are involved.
Two of the temperaments are strong and loud: RED and YELLOW.
Two are more quiet and thoughtful: BLUE and GREEN.
The combinations of any two – of the four – come with certain strengths and weaknesses.
Temperaments are also dramatically altered by turning them over to God. He balances out negative traits and strengthens weak tendencies. Actually, it makes perfect sense to give Him the reigns. After all, He is the one who created you, intentionally, with your specific temperament! He is able to modify it into the exact person He intended for YOU. Psalm 139:13-16 (The Message)
“Oh yes, you shaped me first inside, then out; you formed me in my mother’s womb. You know me inside and out, you know every bone in my body; You know exactly how I was made, bit by bit, how I was sculpted from nothing into something. Like an open book, you watched me grow from conception to birth; all the stages of my life were spread out before you, The days of my life all prepared before I’d even lived one day.”
Do yourself a favor. Take a temperament test and read up on what makes you – YOU. Your family and friends will thank you.

Now, when you discover the exact temperament with which you parent-(and, you usually parent differently than your temperament outside the home) – I have cheat sheets that will assist you in dealing with each of your kids’ temperaments. Go to my store. If you parent as a BLUE, use the BLUE cheat sheet, and so on.
Example: I am a YELLOW/RED, and I parented as a RED. My husband is a BLUE/RED and parented as a BLUE.
My friend Vicki Barnes wrote The Real You, the best book on the topic for further study.
I love getting your questions! I promise to read every one you submit and may even answer them by combining several, on the same topic, in future posts.
Enjoy this new world of insight!
